Curatorial statement

My interest for this specific theme stems from the fact that today’s society utilize data to determine many aspects of human life. Human life is being quantified through digital information – also called datafication (Mejias & Couldry, 2019, p. 1). Here I would like to add that data is not necessarily the determining factor of aspects of human life but is rather the input for some determining processes. In particular when data is used by algorithms for predictions, search results and even dating life. Data is not neutral and can be used by big tech companies to exert power over the individual, society and democracy (Acker & Kreisberg, 2020, p. 106). I argue that if some aspects of human life rely on data then the data must represent reality very closely. This specific sentence can also be understood as my curatorial statement.
